The Pent- stood for the fifth generation of processors; -ium connected it with something elemental and strong such as sodium, magnesium, or titanium. In worldwide research conducted by Lexicon, Pentium outperformed all other candidates on key dimension of advanced technology and superior performance. Under Andy Grove’s leadership, Intel moved an entire marketplace with one seven-letter word.
